Western Digital was launch the world first 2 TB hard drive. It’s not a high performance 7.200 rpm drive but spindle speed with dynamical optimize range 5.400 rpm – 7.200 rpm energy-efficient drive. Western Digital doesn’t talk about its actual spindle speeds and prefers to refer to IntelliPower, which is the marketing name for the balance between spindle speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms, as part of its effort to design drives with the best balance between performance and power consumption. The high capacity of these drives also makes them ideal for devices that get turned on all day long like Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices or home theatre PCs requiring lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation. Today, we’ll be looking at the largest and greenest hard drives currently on the market.

WD's Caviar Green Series

WD's Caviar Green Series

The WD’s Caviar Green WD20EADS, based on four platters for it’s full 2 TB of capacity. It’s interface based on SATAII with NCQ and have 32 MB cache. The operating temperature range was increased from between five degrees Celsius and 55 degrees Celsius to between zero degrees Celsius and 60 degrees Celsius, which is also the case for the two other drives.

Western Digital claim, WD’s Caviar Green WD20EADS, as hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.

WD’s Caviar Green WD20EADS is an Eco Friendly product use feature like IntelliPower, Intelliseek, low power spin-up and advanced power technology to tackle the issue of getting performance with less power consumed and has reduced power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to standard desktop or power savings of 4-5 watts over standard desktop.

Other WD’ Caviar Green series feature include No Touch ramp load technology. With this feature, the recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drice protection in transit. Other feature that are very important is StableTrac, the motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations.
