In this discussion, we will be guided and explained, how to fix the Blue Screen of Death / BSOD in our machine with Microsoft Windows Debugger. In the previous discussion, we have explained how to read error code of the Blue Screen of Death at Guidelines Read Error Code of Blue Screen of Death. When Blue Screen of Death occurs at our machine, memory dump file will be created by operating system and we use this file to gathering information to fix this problem.

The first step to get any information when Blue Screen of Death occurs at our machine, we can read memory dump file with Microsoft Windows Debugger. So to do, We will need to install the Microsoft Debugging tools and it can be downloaded from :

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx

The second step, we must set the symbol file path to user the Microsoft symbol server, do this from the File menu and set the path to :

srv*c:\websymbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

The debugger will download symbols to help it decode our crash memory dump files and we will need to create a folder to store these. We would recommend c:\websymbols, unless we already have a folder of the same name.

ms-windows-debugger

Next, set the symbol file path to root of whatever drive contains the memory dump file. Then open the crash memory dump file, usually with the name *.DMP. After some time, we will get brief analysis of the crash. We will usually see a line beginning “Probably caused by”, that names the DLL or driver most likely to have caused the crash. The debugger provides a more thorough analysis of our crash than we’ll get from the initial Blue Screen of Death / BSOD error screen.
